Where Dance To The Radio have their hands tied with taking budding Leeds talent to the next level, On The Bone take up the task of giving a leg up to the city's swarming basement level action. With releases from Wintermute and That Fucking Tank, the label have set about doing a great job in nurturing the very distinct sounds grumbling from Yorkshire.

Bands from that way specialise in obtuse song titles and peculiar auras all round. Not a lot of pop then, but certainly no shortage of engaging interest on offer and this is right from the off, introduced by This Et Al's grandiose stand-off between crashing drums and frantically ringing guitars. Then an HV fave in The Twilight Sad return for an earnest, recognisably Scottish blast of more alt.rock before compilation workhorses Napoleon IIIrd buzz out a cantankerous beat of minimal, electronically-fused post-punk. Thrown together, these tracks grate like the artistically aggressive 1979 underground but like, with internet access.

Breaking up the comp's chaotic disposition, The Lodger's 'The Conversation' hums smoothly with The Dears' emotional sincerity, whilst your token treat at the end comes from Grammatics – Leeds' next success story you would hope – with a soft remix of 'Polar Swelling'. Top tip is I Concur's beautifully crafted, song-led post-rock – revitalised here in pleasing remix form.

Soundtracking a month down at the Brudenell Social Club, you've got a winning combination of dark abstractness and the sound of a quality music community working in harmony. There's plenty here that Forward Russia are responsible for and they should be pleased with themselves.
