This release marks the first time renowned Leeds noise-rock duo That Fucking Tank have dabbled with vocals, although the boldness of this move should perhaps be considered in the light of Andy Abbott and James Islip's previous association with guest singer Giles Bailey in the now defunct but rather wonderful Kill Yourself. As you might expect, 'The Awesome Magnet' evokes the threesome's earlier band in a variety of ways, but also hangs on to enough of Tank's distinguished sonic identity to stand up on its own merits – indeed, Bailey's delightfully raw, occasionally processed vocals provide a good focus for Abbott's breakneck riffage and Islip's barrelling rhythms. B-side 'Fascist Because Beautiful' finds them down to a two-piece once again, assuredly exploring the dynamic possibilities of drums and baritone guitar – its semi-improvised feel more representative, indeed, of their freeform live workouts then anything they've previously committed to record.
